Prof. Dr. Heinrich Freiherr Von Stietencron is an Indologist, epigrapher, presently the Director, Orissa Project-II, funded by the German Research Foundation and also the Emeritus Professor of Indology at University of Tübingen in Germany. Dr. Stietencron held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Indology and Comparative Religion at University of Tübingen from 1973 to 1998.

Prof. Stietencron is one of the leading figures in German Indology in the lines of 19th Century Indologists like Max Müller, Hermann Oldenberg, Theodor Aufrecht, Heinrich Zimmer, to present day likes of Hermann Kulke, late Anncharlott Eschmann. Prof. Stietencron represents the German legacy of Indology. His discussion of the concepts of Hinduism, and survey of the religion has broken new grounds. He is the author of a large number of scholarly books, articles, monographs and other publications.
Prof. Dr. Heinrich von Stietencron’s research interests include various aspects of Hinduism like theology, ritual and religious iconography, the Puranas.
Dr. Heinrich von Stietencron has been a leading researcher in the regional traditions of Indian state of Orissa and general history of Jagannath cult.
Dr. Heinrich von Stietencron has been awarded the Indian civilian high award of Padma Shri in 2004 for contributions to Indian literature and education Padma Shri Awards List 2004.
Prof. H. v. Stietencron heads the Orissa Project, which focuses on the construction and transformation of socio-cultural identities in the Indian state of Orissa. The coordination of the research center in Germany is Prof. Hermann Kulke, Department of History, University of Kiel and in India by Prof. Dr. P. K Nayak, Department of Anthropology, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. The program under the direction of Prof. H. v. Stietencron concerns the history and socio-cultural significance of sacred centers and religious communities in Orissa. Prof. H. v. Stietencron has given particular consideration to the religious centers with a historical overview of cartographic and religion over 2000 years of regional history. Prof. H. v. Stietencron has also undertaken a survey of all the temples and shrines in the capital of Orissa (Bhubaneswar), 50 years after its foundation, which offers a mirror of the current religious spectrum in Orissa.
Under the Purana Research Publications of Tuebingen, Prof. v. Stietencron has contributed heavily to the Epic and Puranic Bibliography up to 1985 (vol. 3, part I and II, 1992) with 2116 pages, with over 8000 annotated entries, and extensive indices.
